Family Adventure Guide: Valley of Fire State Park
Valley of Fire State Park is about a one hour drive north of Las Vegas. It’s the largest state park in Nevada! It boasts beautiful landscapes and unique hiking, which is why this makes our list of must-visit’s on our road trip. There is a $10 entrance fee, which can be applied towards a night of camping at one of two in-park campgrounds.
Please note that temperatures in the summer months can be dangerously hot here. We visited in February and still needed sunscreen and plenty of water!
Camping in the park:
Arch Rock Campground – This campground is in the state park, is open all year round and is on a first come, first served basis. Amenities include drinking water, flush toilets, showers and an RV dump station. Each campsite has a table, fire ring and grate.

Atlatl Campground – This campground is also in the state park, is open all year round and is on a first come-first served basis. Generators are not allowed in the campground. $20/night and $10 for electric/water hookups. This campground can accommodate tents, trailers and larger RVs up to 55’.
Boondocking Sites (outside the park):
Overton Wildlife Management Area– This site has 7 large sites, offering a picnic table and fire ring, and free camping up to 8 days. There are no facilities. It is only 8.5 miles from Valley of Fire State Park.
Poverty Flats/Snowbird Mesa– This is the site we chose! Poverty Flats is a large mesa with GORGEOUS views! It can accommodate large RVs and is free to stay for up to 14 days. Poverty Flats is only 5.5 miles from Valley of Fire State Park, making it an ideal free camping location. Just look at these views!!
Family Friendly Hiking:
Fire Wave Trail
We only had time to do this one hike, and it is one of the most popular hikes in the park!
It’s an easy, 1.5 mile out and back trail. The Fire Wave is sandstone formation with beautiful sandstone layers resembling an ocean wave. The trail starts out on a sandy path and then ends with walking on large sandstone formations.
Selah is always happy being carried with our Piggyback Rider!
Pastel (Pink) Canyon Trail
If we had the time, we would have also hiked the Pink Canyon Trail. This trail looks incredibly beautiful with pink sandstone walls all around! It’s only 2 miles and rated as “easy” so it makes our list of family friendly hikes!
White Dome Trail
This is an “easy” 1.1 mile loop trail. Hikers will walk past incredible sandstone walls, rock formations, and even a small slot canyon on this hike. We bet kids would love hiking through the short slot canyon.
Rainbow Vista Trail
This trail is a 1.1 mile out and back “easy” hike that leads to the Fire Canyon Overlook. Hikers will enjoy seeing the beautiful rainbow of colors in the sandstone formations.
Petroglyph Canyon
This is a very short trail at .8 miles, but hikers can enjoy seeing prehistoric Indian petroglyphs.
More Family Fun Experiences:
Eat at Seven Sisters Picnic Area
This is a great spot for a picnic! The area offers covered picnic tables, grills and restrooms. Our kiddos enjoyed climbing rocks and watching for little prairie dogs scurrying by in the sand.
Take a Scenic Drive
It’s been said that all of the roads through this state park offer beautiful scenery. The most well known scenic drive is the White Domes Road, a 5.7 mile road that winds through red rock formations and inspiring landscapes.
If you are short on time, like we were, at least make sure you do the Fire Wave hike and enjoy a scenic drive through White Domes Road. Don’t forget to stop and take a picture with the Valley of Fire park sign! Whether you have just a few hours or a few days, we hope you are able to come and visit this awesome state park!
