The Switch to Homeschool
I’ve shared a little bit about how we homeschool and what curriculum we use while we travel full time in our RV, you can read that blog post here.
Five years ago, my son was four years old and I started to think about what we would do for school. We first considered homeschooling as an option because I knew quite a few families who homeschooled. I was impressed with their children’s intellect and skills. Since my husband is a pilot, his work schedule only lets him be at home for 2-3 days a week, and usually never on a weekend when the kids would not be in school. We decided that homeschool would be a good fit for our family so that the kids could actually see their dad when he was home. Homeschooling also allowed us to have the flexibility to go on trips whenever we wanted to hop on a flight!
For the first few years of homeschooling, I used a variety of different workbooks. I focused mostly on math, reading, spelling/phonics, and penmanship. We dabbled in lessons of science and history here and there, but I let much of their learning come from playing and trips to local zoos and museums. Because I was using a hodgepodge of workbooks, I didn’t have a thought out curriculum calendar, and I didn’t have lesson plans to follow. I was a total homeschool newbie! I felt unorganized and at times, unqualified.
Last year I started to notice some major gaps in our homeschool learning. My son struggled with writing because he had not learned the building blocks of sentence structure and forming thoughts and ideas into paragraphs. My daughter struggled with math. There were subjects that they did really well with, but overall I felt like I needed a change in our homeschool curriculum. My son entered 4th grade and my daughter started 2nd grade this year, I knew it was a good time for a fresh start.
The kids needed depth in their education.
I needed guidance and organization.
We all needed a more structured curriculum.
I made the switch from using our hodgepodge of workbooks to exclusively using Abeka Homeschool this year. We are now two months into using this curriculum and I’m so thankful we found Abeka!
Abeka has a wealth of resources for teaching each subject. I love having a planned out curriculum already written for me. The curriculum lesson plans not only show me exactly what to teach every day, but it also provides ideas for different activities and games that help make learning fun. Abeka also has teacher answer keys for each lesson, quizzes and tests! This saves me so much time with grading their schoolwork and tests. All of these things help me be able to teach my three children at the same time in a much more organized way. When I’m well prepared and organized, our homeschool day usually goes smoothly and we can finish the work done faster. That means more time to play and everyone is happy!
